Prof. Bart Lambert

I am an Associate Professor of Late Medieval History and Director of the SHOC (Social History of Capitalism) Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Before joining VUB in 2018, I was awarded my PhD in History from Ghent University in 2011. I subsequently held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of York (2012–14, 2016–18) and a lectureship at Durham University (2014–16).

My research explores transnational dynamics of migration, mobility, and commercialization in late medieval Europe. This work has resulted in four books with leading academic publishers—two monographs and two edited volumes—as well as numerous articles in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals, including the English Historical Review and History Workshop Journal.

Convinced that research should transcend disciplinary boundaries, I have worked closely with scholars in other disciplines, including archaeology, geochemistry, genetics and linguistics. I have held the Van Dyck Chair at the University of California, Los Angeles (2021–22), the Belgian Chair at Birkbeck College, University of London (2019–20) and am currently a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge (2025–26).
